Address by VDG Lion Colin Duncan (Chair MERL team)

Lion Colin gave a brief history of his lionistic life starting in 1978.

He then went on to discuss his role a chair of the MERL team.

District has been losing members for the last three year, has have other organisations.

Our aim is to serve our community and not just a fundraising organisation.

MERl stands for membership, extension, membership and leadership.

48% of new members leave in the first three year, stating that they were board and not being included. Lions now have a global leadership team. If every club introduces two new members and the district formed one new club we would be healthily out of transition. Current membership 1080.

VDG is setting up a learning collage for the training of district officers. VGD thanked ZC mike for inviting him along to the zone meeting and passed on receiving questions until the end of the meeting.

Talk by Lion Peter Dando (district H&S officer)

What is risk assessment?  The potential of a hazard occurring.

We risk assess every day, making mental risk assessments on all of the activities we carryout, we need to get into the mind frame of writing down risk assessments for all lionistic activities. A good way of writing a risk assessment is to use a risk matrix and a method statement.

If looking on the district website then be sure to use the 2006 H&S policy, this contains more information and clearer information. IN a recent district H&S questionnaire only 50% of our zone replied.

Presentation by Caerphilly Lions Club

Lion Dennis demonstrated the unique flashing lions badge and gave a brief description on how it came about. The badge has been officially endorsed by MD and international.

Orders have already been placed and the word is spreading. For every one sold Caerphilly lions club will receive a donation.

Fellow lions were invited to purchase a badge at a reduced price.

Lion Darren from Abertillery lions club presented a resolution to zone for support to send to convention.

‘We resolve that any club or individual can opt out of the current District electronic only form of communication and receive a paper copy’

The explanation is that the club feels that it is not being serviced by the district, and the cost of communication is being pushed back to individual lions. As a lion with no officer responsibilities what dose to district do for me?

A discussion followed will all taking part, with various point of view ranging from, what is the problem to agreement in principal with the resolution.

To expedite the discussion ZC asked if all clubs would take the resolution back to their clubs for discussion.

Caerphilly graciously agreed to host the next zone meeting at a date to be arranged.

ZC thanked all lions for their attendance and invited all present to some refreshments kindly laid on by Abertillery lions club.

Meeting closed at 9.40pm.

Lion Club Donation

Abertillery Lions Club (Blaenau Gwent Valleys ) has recently given assistance to the area of Cumbria which has been seriously affected by the November floods.

Lion president, Doreen Woods reports that although Abertillery Lions Club mainly focuses on helping those in our local community, members immediately decided to support their fellow Lions from Cumbria and the people living in the area by making a donation of £250 to the Lions Club International Recovery fund, designated to the local Lions of Cumbria to assist them in giving immediate relief to those local people with very urgent needs in any of the areas affected by the disaster.

A Generous Christmas Spirit

While out and about with Santa and his sleigh, myself and other members of Abertillery Lions Club found the usual generous Christmas spirit prevailing in Blaenau Gwent in spite of the recession. Lions Club Christmas Coordinator, John Cook paid tribute to his fellow members for their support and hard work over this busy period. In spite of a number of difficulties, members supported each other, making sure that all their Christmas commitments were carried out.

The lions would like to thank the staff of Tesco, Ebbw Vale ,Tesco Abertillery, Morrison's and Asda for their welcome and all those customers who kindly donated to this year's charity, the Alzheimer's Society. Over £1000 was raised over the period, which will be given to those working with Alzheimer sufferers and their carers and other charities in Blaenau Gwent.

If you would like to become a member of Abertillery Lions Club, then you are welcome to attend their meetings at the Corner Club, Abertillery every second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 8pm.
